I recently became a registered behavioral technician working in the field of applied behavior analysis. As an RBT, I take data for behavioral therapists and shape behavior based on their plan for the client.
I was inspired by my journey as a parent with a child who is neurodivergent. What does that mean exactly, you may ask. Quite simply it means my son thinks and learns differently than a typical boy his age. I never knew how complicated and difficult that could be until we started recognizing big challenges in him as he has grown.
Did you know that ABA principles can and have been used by many of you? How many of you have used a sticker chart or candy to potty train? What about telling yourself, “If I eat healthy this week, I can have the dessert or drinks on Saturday night”? It’s called positive reinforcement, and it is the most preferred method to change behavior. You just have to find the most reinforcing thing that can be utilized. Behavior goes where reinforcement flows!
