Positive reinforcement happens every day of our lives. It happens when we get a paycheck or treat ourselves to a coffee or snack break mid-day. Token boards are a tangible item that help us see our accomplishments and let us know when we are ready for our reinforcement. As parents or teachers, you are probably familiar with the potty-training sticker charts. Every time a child goes on the potty, they get a sticker. For so many stickers, they get something special like ice cream or a small toy.
In Applied Behavior Analysis, we usually use token boards to get rid of a maladaptive behavior. For example, If Johnny engages in aggression and tantrums, for every 5 minutes he does not engage in the maladaptive or target behaviors, he will get a token. When he has 5 tokens, he will get a back-up reinforcer. Usually, upfront we ask the client what they would like to work for. If they do engage in behavior, they will be reminded what they are working for, and their timer will be reset.
Adults can make them for themselves too, if it helps. Say your goal is to work out 5 out of 7 days a week. For every work out, you get a token. When you get 5 tokens, you can have a special dessert, drinks with friends, a nice meal out, or whatever is reinforcing to you.
Good luck with your goals and let me know if you need any extra support with your positive reinforcement!

Did you know that animal trainers also use positive reinforcement too?
